News and Research about Breast Cancer!1/5/2010 1:09 PM
Studies have showed over the years different results concerning soy food: Soy was associated with risk reduction of breast cancer, but studies also suggested that soy may increase breast cancer cells grow and multiply. A new study (December 2009) shows that breast cancer survivors can benefit from eating reasonable amounts of soy products. The study shows that a group of breast cancer survivors in China that consumed moderated amount of soy food (up to 11 grams daily) have had lower risks of death or recurrence of breast cancer in follow up. Among 5,000 women who had surgery to remove the breast cancer, around 400 women died and 500 had recurrences or breast cancer-related deaths during a median of 4 years In Soy foods there are many isoflavones ( phytoestrogens possessing both estrogen-like and anti-estrogen actions). The study showed that women that use the most soy protein had a 30 % lower risk of dying during the study period, and abut 30 % lower risk of having their cancer return compared to women that used the least amount of soy protein. For conclusion researchers report "soy foods are safe to eat and that these foods may offer some protective benefit for long-term health". Another breaking news concerning chemotherapy: Women with breast cancer treated with chemotherapy and after that with Tamoxifen had about 20% improvement in disease-free survival compared to women treated with tamoxifen only. The test also showed association with better survival when the chemotherapy and Tamoxifen were given consecutively than if taking concurrently. Another study (11 December 2009) shows that combining 2 specific drugs extended the lives of women with breast cancer who don't respond to medicines anymore. According to the study 300 patients women received a combination of the drugs: Herceptin and Tykerb and lived nearly five months longer than those given Tykerb alone. This study gives patients dealing with breast cancer great hope.
